Oh Poop! Did You Know That Poop Matters?

Research has suggested a link between chronic constipation and cognitive decline[1][2][3]. One study found that chronic constipation was tied to worse cognitive abilities, even after controlling for the effects of age, gender, race, education, and other factors[2]. Specifically, the study estimated that constipation was equivalent to about three years of aging in terms of cognitive ability[2].

Another study analyzed data from more than 110,000 adults and found that chronic constipation was associated with declining brain health[3]. The study further suggests that constipation and cognition are connected via the gut microbiome[3]. Other research has also implicated an imbalance in gut bacteria as a possible contributing factor to cognitive decline[1].

Although these studies only suggest a correlation and do not establish a causal relationship between constipation and cognitive aging, it is worth considering the potential role of gut health in cognitive function. One way to help promote gut health and regularity is to consume a diet high in fiber and probiotics, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and fermented foods[1][3]. Staying hydrated, engaging in regular physical activity, and managing stress may also help support digestive health[1][3].

It is important to note that many factors can influence cognitive aging, and constipation is likely just one of many potential contributors. However, maintaining good gut health through a balanced diet and other healthy habits may have wider benefits beyond digestion.

  1. It actually matters more than you know.y pancreatic cancer was possibly caused by poop disorders. Drs never tell you that or look that deep into the problem.

    1. So sorry to hear you were ill, I hope you are ok now? I had no idea that pancreatic cancer could be caused by this only colon cancer. My doctor told me that it was normal to go 3 – 4 days, so that has been my life. Lately I started Probiotics which are helping but it is good for everyone that they are becoming more aware now.
